Obesity In Later Life Leads To Increased Risks Of Disability But Not Of Dying - And To 'a Ticking Time Bomb' For Health And Social Services

Research carried out at the Peninsula Medical School in the South West of England has ascertained that obesity in after life does not make a solid difference to risks of death among older people but that it is a major contributor to increased disablement in later life - creating a ticking time bomb for health services in developed countries.

The research is published in the August 2008 edition of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

The Peninsula Medical School research team worked with data on just under 4,000 participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) aged 65 and older and living in the biotic community. Each player had their weight and height careful and their BMI (body mass index) calculated and they were followed up for quintet years. The researchers compared people with BMI of 20 to 24.9 (i.e. those of recommended weight), with those who had a BMI of 25 to 29.9 ("overweight"), 30 to 34.9 ("obese"), or 35 or over ("gravely obese").

The results showed that the higher an older person's BMI, the more likely he or she was to build up mobility problems (measured victimisation a standard performance try out) or to develop difficulty carrying knocked out everyday tasks. The results also showed that, in older people, the connection between higher BMI and the risk of decease is decrepit - simply severely rotund older hands seemed to run this increased risk.

Dr Iain Lang, wHO led the research from the Peninsula Medical School, commented: "We have known for some time that young and middle-aged adults who are overweight run for a higher risk of death and it was presumed that this held true for older people. In fact, our results show that the risk of infection of anxious is higher only for the most severely obese but that all older people world Health Organization are overweight are at significantly increased risk of developing problems with mobility and carrying out everyday tasks."

He added: "This research is important because a growing proportion of the population is aged 65 or over, and more and more of these elder people ar overweight. In fact, in most developed countries middle-aged and aged adults are more likely to be obese than people in any other age group. These findings have huge significance for the speech of health care, both now and in the future. Increasing numbers of older people and higher levels of overweight and obesity testament lead to a greater burden of disability and ill health and place an huge strain on health and social services. The egress is likely to get worse as time goes on and represents a ticking prison term bomb for health services around the world."

The research team recommends that older people should speak to their doctor or other health care professional about their weight, and take their advice regarding slimming down if they are stoutness. The advice may include more recitation, a variety in diet, or both.

Lindley Owen, Consultant in Public Health at Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust, aforesaid: "Staying a healthy system of weights can be a playfulness and relatively easy thing to do, even as people develop older. People don't own to bring together a gymnasium or fill on complicated new diets. There are many everyday opportunities to stay active through regular walking, horticulture or social groups, patch eating sweet, nutritious nutrient is gratifying at any age.

"Our experience of running supported walking and cycling groups has shown that older people benefit in many ways from regular physical activity. Not only do they get fitter and physically stronger but the enjoyment of spending time with friends in the open air can give new confidence and a real tanginess for life.

"People are living longer but this study shows that excess weight fundament have a real impact on the quality of people's lives which lavatory reduce the benefit of those spear carrier years. We must do all we can to encourage older friends or relatives to build gratifying exercise into their daily routine and develop good habits ourselves to take into our retirement years. People can visit hypertext transfer protocol://www.strollbacktheyears.info or http://www.healthpromcornwall.org (01209 313419) for more advice."

The PCT and City Council work closely with a wide reach of military volunteer and statutory agencies to provide increased opportunities for everyone to eat more healthily and to incite around a bit more. For those who are already identical overweight or obese, the PCT provides a comprehensive weight management service for people of all ages. "

Mel B Apologises for Spice Girls Tour Cancellation

Whilst swanning around the Riviera at this year's 48th Monte Carlo Festival, Take 40 Australia - there to interview cast members from hit TV series Desperate Housewives, Lost, and Ugly Betty - ran into a not-so-scary sight - SCARY SPICE, aka. Melanie Brown!

Interestingly enough, despite being a huge star of the US version of 'Dancing With The Stars' earlier this year, and starring in an upcoming TV talent show with Joey Fatone (from N'Sync), Mel B wasn't there to promote her TV appearances, she was in fact there in her new role as an entertainment correspondent for US TV show 'Access Hollywood'!

Mel B was interviewing celebrities like Kim Kardashian, and partying with Prince Albert of Monaco in her new role as reporter, but Take 40 pulled her aside exclusively and flipped the script turning the interviewer, into the interviewee.

Whilst she had a lot to say about her upcoming acting projects, TV projects, fashion range, new album, new husband, new daughter, there was only one thing we wanted to know.... WHY DIDN'T THE SPICE GIRLS TOUR DOWN UNDER IN AUSTRALIA EARLIER THIS YEAR, AS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED?!?!?!?

"Can I just say that our tour started off with one date booked, and then things just escalated and snowballed," she explained. "We never actually set dates - it kinda just rollercoastered. Tickets should never have even gone on sale in some places - I don't know whether they did in Australia or not, but we didn't even know that."

"We should've come to Australia - that's a shame that we didn't," she concedes, before adding, "I will - I'll come and visit you guys when I release my next album."

Not quite the same Mel, but we'll think about forgiving you! Brown is currently recording her second solo album in the States, and hopes the project will be released sometime later this year.

Angelina Jolie makes surprise visit to Baghdad

UN goodwill ambassador and Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has travelled to Iraq on a humanitarian mission and met with officials to demand help for people displaced by the war.
Although a scheduled press conference at the US embassy was cancelled, the Oscar-winning actress spoke to CNN telling the station that she wanted more to be done for the Iraqi families driven from their homes.
The 32-year-old said: "There are over two million displaced people and there never seems to be a real coherent plan to help them. There's lots of good will and lots of discussion but there seems to be a lot of talk at the moment and a lot of pieces that need to be put together."
The US embassy in Baghdad confirmed that Jolie had lunch with US troops serving in Iraq and had held a meeting with their top commander General David Petraeus, senior diplomats and Iraq's minister for displaced people.
A US embassy official told AFP: "She is here in her official capacity as a UN goodwill ambassador to meet with US, Iraqi and NGO officials to discuss internally displaced persons."
She also held talks in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone with the UN head of mission Staffan di Mistura and there were also plans for her to meet Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a US official said.
Jolie told CNN: "Of the two million internally displaced, it's estimated 58% are under 12-years-old. It's a very high number of people in a very, very vulnerable situation and a lot of young kids".
"So far, the different US officials I met with and different local people I've met with all have shared concerns, very, very strongly. They have spoken out about the humanitarian crisis, but there seems to be a block in," said the star.
Jolie continued: "What happens in Iraq and how Iraq settles in the years to come is going to affect the entire Middle East. And a big part of what it's going to affect, how it settles, is how these people are returned and settled into their homes and their community and brought back together and whether they can live together and what their communities look like."
She added: "It's in our best interest to address a humanitarian crisis on this scale because displacement can lead to a lot of instability and aggression."
Jolie is no stranger to the country. In August 2007, she met some of the 1,200 Iraqis stranded on the border between Iraq and Syria and appealed for more international support for those affected by the Iraq conflict.
During that tour, Jolie left UNHCR officials to visit privately with US and other multinational forces based in the area.
The following month, she launched a $150m appeal by UNICEF, the UN's fund for children, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to help educate 1m children affected by the war.
